Amazing Abigail

without comments

This story was written and published by the Twin Cities Pioneer Press (for those who don’t know, the Twin Cities are St. Paul and Minneapolis in Minnesota).  This story is obviously a follow-up to the original article covering Abigail’s disturbing pool accident, because the lead addresses her recent death.  The author begins a summary of what had happened, and what the action the goverment has taken in response to this accident.

The article seems very thorough and well-written, except how it does not include a quote from her parents.  Abigail was battleing her injuries for nine-months.  I think that although this article was written the day of her death, I am sure the author should have had a quote of some kind from the parents in the article, even if it had been an older quote from an earlier article.  It seems incomplete to me without a comment of some kind from a relative or something.  Granted it is tricky when writting a story about a 6-year-old, but this is such a sad, touching story deserves an equally touching quote.

On a side note, it is sad how it takes something tragic like this to happen before certain safety precautions are taken.

Longstreet first, Stetson next? (Let’s hope!)

without comments

After a year and a half of going to Stetson, it is no surprise when people tell me horror stories about mold in their shower, ceiling vent, floor, walls, and any other nook and cranny of their residence hall.

Unfortunately, though, not too many steps are being made to remedy this problem at Stetson. But Longstreet Elementary in Daytona Beach is lucky enough to have their mold issues resolved. According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, “Moldy carpet has since been replaced with vinyl tile, and the four classrooms have undergone repeated inspections and cleaning.”

Though renovations have been made to the problematic classrooms, Jacksonville toxicologist and former UF professor Richard Lipsey said that “This building has not been investigated properly by a real expert. I’ve been investigating schools for 35 years. I would not put my child in (that) building.”

So that gets me to thinking:
1. Where did Longstreet Elementary find the company that did the renovations?
2. How much did the renovations cost, and how much will accurate mold testing cost?
3. Now that I know about improper mold testing, is the Zeta Tau Alpha house in danger, taking into consideration the renovations they had last fall because of mold?
