McCain gaining speed

with one comment

In a New York Times article on McCain’s recent ability to act more diplomatic than he has in previous years was, I thought, a very well-balanced piece.  Normally I read articles or watch programs about the possible presidetcial candidates and it is always obvious who the paper or author supports.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that this article showed as many sides as it could.  The reporter spoke to McCain himself, some of his former rivals, current rivals, and a couple others who offered their opinions on McCain’s behavior.  I think this is incredibly important, especially in something as important as a presidential election, to be able to show your audience all the sides of an issue so the reader can make an informed decision.  This is something I have come to expect from reporters, and I generally do not watch or read media if I know that the people who are writting it will clearly favor one side over the other.

I also thought it was very good that the reporter was able to keep the conflict clear in the course of the article.  It was very clear that there are those who think McCain is changing for the better, and those who think his personality changes are temporary.  Both sides are portrayed thuroughly enough for the reader.
